Are you going to Glasgow?

Diabetes UK LogoThe Diabetes UK Professional Conference is on next week – from 7 – 9 March at the SECC in Glasgow. This annual conference is the only event of its kind in the UK run exclusively for healthcare professionals and scientists working in the field of diabetes. It is one of the largest healthcare conferences in the UK and provides delegates with a unique opportunity to explore different aspects of diabetes, attend speaking events, learn about the latest research and get to experience new products in the field of diabetes – like Timesulin, of course!

Timesulin CEO John Sjölund and I are attending and Timesulin has a booth – do stop by to say hello at Stand F2 - from where our team will be sharing the benefit of knowing for sure if you took your last shot or not with diabetes specialist nurses and doctors. Based on our experience at former conferences, I am excited for the variety of interesting people we will meet and am looking forward to having the chance to introduce hundreds of diabetes professionals to Timesulin.

Our main goal, as always, remains to make life a little easier for all people living with diabetes. We’ll be live-tweeting from the conference – follow us: @timesulin, @susanmoolman and @johnsjolund.

Will we see you in Glasgow?

Diabetes 11.11.11

A friend of ours has launched a great initiative to help raise awareness of diabetes this month called Diabetes 11.11.11. On November 11th, (11.11.11),  documentary filmmakers, students, and other inspired citizens across the planet will record the human experience over a 24-hour period and contribute their voice to the second annual global day of media creation called One Day on Earth. Together, everyone will create a shared archive and a film.

Mike from Diabetes in Spain has invited everyone from the DOC – both online and offline – to take part in a diabetes-focused initiative. He’s inviting all to take a diabetes-related image/photograph to be released on 11.11.11 and submit it either via this Flickr group, via twitter with the #diabetes111111 hashtag or directly on the Diabetes in Spain site.

Please join and share! – diabetes111111.com. Imagine being able to capture the world on the same day, each giving their unique perspective on Diabetes around the globe!

You asked, Mike – here we go.

Insulin pen with timer helps diabetics remember to take insulin on time

A new product in the management of insulin-dependent diabetes offers patients significant relief through an incorporated timer that tells them how long it’s been since their last insulin injection.

Called Timesulin, this innovative ‘smart cap’ marks the first major step forward from the insulin pens that have been a feature of diabetes management since their release twenty years ago.

366 Million People Worldwide Now Have Diabetes, Experts Say

LONDON — An estimated 366 million people worldwide now suffer from diabetes and the global epidemic is getting worse, health officials said Tuesday.

The International Diabetes Federation described the number of cases as “staggering,” with one person dying from diabetes every seven seconds.

The federation called for concrete measures to stop the epidemic, urging officials focusing on chronic diseases at a United Nations meeting next week to commit to specific targets to prevent cases and to invest in more research. Experts also said diabetes care should be integrated into local health clinics.

“The clock is ticking for the world’s leaders,” Jean Claude Mbanya, the group’s president, said in a statement. “We expect action from their meeting next week at the United Nations that will halt diabetes’ relentlessly upwards trajectory.”

The figures were announced in Lisbon, Portugal, during the European meeting of the group, an umbrella organization that represents associations from more than 160 countries.

It estimated that diabetes causes 4.6 million deaths every year and that health systems spend $465 billion annually fighting the disease. That includes both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
